A report from Allot Communications on Tuesday showed that Google's YouTube video sharing website is the number one destination for smartphone users, bringing in about 17 percent of all mobile data traffic.
“As video streaming continues to reign supreme within mobile networks, YouTube continues as the single most significant website for video steaming and sharing, now accounting for 45 percent of overall mobile video streaming traffic and 17 percent of total traffic on mobile networks,” the report said.
The report confirms the mobile platform dominance of YouTube, who said last month that it was streaming more than 200 million videos a day to users of smartphones and other mobile devices. Allot's report also showed that video streaming has increased its existing lead over other services on the mobile platform, accounting for 37 percent of total traffic. File sharing came in second among services, a sign users are beginning to consider mobile Internet a viable alternative to direct connectivity.
The report showed tremendous growth in the social networking realm among mobile users, with Twitter growing by 1,800 percent and Facebook's growth coming in at 1,000 percent. Among App Stores, Apple maintains its lead in the market with an 89 percent share, compared to Android's nine percent.
