.XXX Domain Approved for Adult Websites
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has approved the implementation of a .xxx domain for adult websites after opposing the idea for years. An ICANN spokesman said the agency, which holds jurisdiction over top-level domains, confirmed the approval.
ICM Registry, a non-profit organization that has been pushing for the new domain, will be charged with distributing it to various porn sites. Even before the domain was approved, the organization hosted a start-up plan pending the domain's regulatory approval.
“In order to provide an orderly process for members of the registrant community and to use our resources effectively during this intervening period, ICM has decided to undertake the first phase of the Industry Reservation Period,” read a statement on the group's website. Back in June, ICANN's board of directors approved the top-level domain, which is the technical term for the part of a domain after the dot, after which the proposal made its way to the next committee. ICM Registry has been a staunch supporter of the .xxx domain, claiming it would be beneficial to the public because it would clearly indicate that a website is not appropriate for children.
