WikiLeaks Suggest China-North Korea Relationship Strained

The latest round of documents leaked by online whistle-blower WikiLeaks indicates that China is growing weary of the antics of North Korea and is beginning to attempt to distance itself from the rogue state.

The following are highlights of these diplomatic dispatches, as released by The Guardian and a number of other international newspapers.

  • According to South Korea's vice-foreign minister, two named Chinese officials that they believed Korea should be reunified under Seoul's control. This view is gaining support with the Beijing leadership.

  • US officials said that China's vice-foreign minister think that Pyongyang was behaving like a "spoiled child" when it sought to get Washington's attention in April 2009 by conducting missile tests.

  • A Chinese ambassador cautioned that North Korean nuclear program was "a threat to the whole world's security".

Last week's shelling of the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong, combined with the sinking of a warship earlier in the year, has prompted US officials to urge China to put pressure on North Korea to ease up on their rogue behavior.
