WikiLeaks Founder Released from British
Jail
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was released on bail from a British prison Thursday, in spite of an appeal of his bail by prosecutors, which a judge rejected. The Australian whistle-blower is wanted in Sweden for questioning in a sex crime investigation.
Assange walked out of the jail to a waiting throng of supporters and journalists. "If justice is not always an outcome, at least it is not dead yet," he said to cheers. "I hope to continue my work and continue to protest my innocence in this matter and to reveal as we get it, which we have not yet, the evidence from these allegations."
Assange was released hours after a hearing on whether he should be granted bail, his third court appearance since he surrendered to British authorities on December 7th. Prosecutors wanted to hold Assange in custody pending a scheduled hearing in January over his extradition to Sweden, appealing the judge's decision to grant him his conditional release on about $316,000 in bail. Assange has vowed to fight extradition attempts.
