Week Four NFL Recap
The idle Kansas City Chiefs became the last undefeated team of the 2010 NFL season as the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears suffered their 1st losses of the season on Sunday. Pittsburgh fell to their division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, in a defensive battle that saw the Ravens up by a score of 10 – 7 halfway through the final quarter. The Steelers took a 14 – 10 lead on a 7-yard run by Rashard Mendenhall; then seemingly locked up a 4-0 start when they stopped the Ravens on third and fourth down from the 2-yard line with two minutes to go in the game. But the Steelers would commit a holding penalty on a punt that would give Baltimore the ball on the Steelers' 40 with 55 seconds to go. Ravens QB Joe Flacco took advantage of the opportunity by completing two passes to Anquan Boldin and one to T.J. Houshmandzadeh before tossing the game-winning score to Houshmandzadeh with 18 seconds left.
In the Sunday night game, the Chicago Bears were manhandled by the New York Giants for their first loss of the season, by a score of 17 - 3. The Giants' stifling defense sacked Bears QB Jay Cutler nine times in the first half, the last of which ended Cutler's night with a concussion. New York would add a tenth sack in the second half, and also knocked Cutler's backup, Todd Collins, from the game. The Bears were held to a dismal 110 total yards in the loss, while NY RB Ahmad Bradshaw compiled 131 yards rushing and a touchdown.
In the most anticipated matchup of the weekend, former Philadelphia QB Donovan McNaab enjoyed a victorious homecoming to Philadelphia as his Washington Redskins beat the Eagles 17 – 12. After 11 successful seasons with the Eagles, McNaab was traded to the Redskins in the off-season. The Philly fans greeted McNaab warmly during player introductions. Philly QB Michael Vick was knocked out of the game in the first quarter with a rib injury, and Kevin Kolb, who was reportedly the reason McNaab was traded, would finish the game. The Redskins' victory sets up a three-way tie atop the NFC East between the Giants, Redskins, and Eagles (2-2); with the idle Dallas Cowboys just a half game behind at 1-2.
The Indianapolis Colts fell to an unfamiliar 2-2 record when Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee made a 59-yard field goal on the game's final play for a 31-28 victory. The loss put the Colts, who've won the AFC South six consecutive years, in a hole. They are currently in a second place tie with the Jaguars and Tennessee Titans behind the 3-1 Houston Texans, but have lost their first two games within the division. The Titans lost to the Denver Broncos 26-20, while the Texans survived a comeback bid from the Oakland Raiders to win 31 – 24.
In other games, Cincinnati fell to Cleveland despite Terrell Owens' 222 yards receiving by a 23-20 score. The San Diego Chargers routed the Arizona Cardinals 41-10, the New York Jets sent the Buffalo Bills to an 0-4 record with a 38-14 victory, and the San Francisco 49ers fell to 0-4 with a heartbreaking 16-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The defending champion New Orleans Saints survived a tough contest with the Carolina Panthers 16-14, the St. Louis Rams knocked off the Seattle Seahawks 20-3, and the Green Bay Packers squeaked by the Detroit Lions 28-26. The week's action concludes tonight as the New England Patriots travel to Miami to face the Dolphins.
