Wall Street On Terror Alert
Intelligence officials have notified the leaders of major Wall Street banks that Al Qaeda operatives working in Yemen may be planning attacks on the banks or top executives. Officials stipulated that the threats at this time are general in nature and no impending plots have been discovered, but believe that the names of top banking executives have at least been discussed among terrorists.
Intelligence officers also added a general warning about Yemen operatives sending package bombs or chemical agents through the mail to the banks. Executives from a number of the nation's top banks have been briefed by the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and New York Police Department officials over the last few weeks on the nature of the threat information. The warnings stem from a series of Al Qaeda writings in “Inspire” magazine warning of attacks against US financial institutions.
Officials said that the latest issue of “Inspire”, an English-language magazine published by Al Qaeda, also mentions the use of anthrax in a terrorist attack. Terror authorities are also monitoring the Web content written by Al Qaeda blogger Abu Suleiman Al-Nasser, who blogged recently: “Rush my Muslim brothers to targeting financial sites and the program sites of financial institutions, stock markets and money markets.”
