Vince Young Out as Titans Starter
Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young is out as the starter for the team, coach Jeff Fisher said after the team lost to the Washington Redskins on Sunday. Fisher's announcement followed a series of incidents: Young was booed by fans, injured his thumb, reportedly argued with Fisher after the game, and left the field without talking to reporters.
Young suffered a torn flexor tendon in his right thumb late in the third quarter and was replaced by a rookie, Rust Smith. Young went back to the locker room after the injury, but would return and have the thumb taped, re-taped, and even tried using a glove to get back in the game, but Fisher stuck with the rookie.
When the game was over, the former University of Texas standout reportedly threw his shoulder pads and jersey into the stands as he walked towards the tunnel leading to the locker room. As reported in the Tennessean, Young muttered and cursed under his breath as Fisher delivered a post-game address to the team. Fisher reportedly asked Young to keep quiet, and the QB finished dressing and prepared to leave the room. Fisher asked Young to not run out on his teammates, when Young reportedly responded, "I'm not running out on my teammates, I'm running out on you," the paper said. Young then reportedly left the facility without talking to reporters.
Fisher did admit that there was a conversation between Young and himself, but wouldn't say what the two discussed. Fellow teammates were likely silent about the incident. "We were told to keep our mouths shut, and that's what I'm gonna do," receiver Nate Washington said. Fisher has said that the reason he kept Young out of the game is because of the injury. He felt that Young could not control the ball well enough with the injured thumb, so he stuck with Smith. After the game the coach said he would start the rookie next week regardless of Young's health.
