Verizon iPad In the Near Future?
Apple and its partners are exchanging information about the next-generation iPad, which will reportedly come in three different versions, one of which would be wired to work on the Verizon network.
The iPad 2, according to sources, will support three separate wireless configurations: CDMA, UMTS, and Wi-Fi only. The original iPad, in comparison only supports UMTS plus Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi only configurations.
UMTS is the standard used by major 3G carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile, while CDMA is used by the Verizon and Sprint mobile networks. The current 3G iPad ships with a MicroSIM card slot, which is only used in the US by AT&T. Customers who wish to connect to another network must either purchase a separate external wireless hotspot device like Verizon's MiFi or trim down a standard SIM card down to MicroSim size.
Current iPad users are not tied to a service contract, paying a monthly fee and able to opt out at any time. If the rumors about the iPad 2 are correct, it means buyers will have to decide which carrier they prefer to use the device on when they buy it. Supporting both major wireless standards will make the iPad 2 available to a much larger audience, whereas US users of the original iPad could only use it with AT&T.
It is not yet known if Apple will work out agreements with Verizon and Sprint. But rumors of a verizon iPad and rumors of a Verizon iPhone have been rampant. If the rumors are true, Apple's market would be greatly expanded, and it would deal a severe blow to AT&T, which has been widely criticized for the inability of its 3G network to keep up with demand from the growing mobile device market.
