Verizon Cancels “New Every Two” Discount

Verizon Wireless followed up its much-anticipated announcement of a new iPhone compatible woth its service by quietly announcing the end of its “new every two” discount for existing customers who upgrade their smartphones.

Like all major wireless carriers, Verizon subsidizes the cell phones it carries.  For instance, the new 16GB iPhone 4 costs customers $200 for customers who sign a two-year service contract, whereas the phone sells for $599 without a contract.  Likewise, the company sells the $570 Motorola Droid X for $200 with a two-year agreement.

The “new every two” promotion went beyond the savings gained from signing a contract, awarding additional credits of $30 to $100 towards a phone upgrade for customers who completed 20 months of their two-year contracts.  The company will still honor the credit for existing customers, but beginning January 16th, the promotion will no longer be offered to new customers or existing customers who renew after that date.
