US Stock Market Summary – December 23, 2010

US stocks remained in a tight range Thursday in a relatively quiet session amid mixed economic indicators that kept investors at bay.  The Dow Jones industrial average gained 14 points on the day, or 0.1 percent, while the Standard & Poors' 500 slid 2 points, 0.2 percent, and the Nasdaq composite lost 6 points, also 0.2 percent.  All three indexes capped off the session about 1 percent higher for the week.

Oil prices topped $90 a barrel on Wednesday for the first time since October 8th, driving the markets to new two-year highs.  Thursday economic reports included jobless claims falling slightly, new home sales edging up in November, and personal income and spending rising a small amount.

The data had little impact on investors, however, as stocks generally hovered around the break even point for most of the day.  Many investors have already closed their portfolios in advance of the end of the fiscal year, and US markets will be closed on Friday for the Christmas holiday weekend.
