US Stock Market Summary – March 15, 2011

US stocks fell sharply early in Tuesday's session amid growing concern over a potential nuclear disaster in Japan before clawing back upward toward the end of the session.  All three major US indexes lost about 1.2 percent on the day after falling much further during the first half of the session.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 138 points on the day after being down as much as 297 points earlier in the day.  29 of the Dow's 30 blue-chip component stocks finished the day with a loss.  The Standard & Poors' 500, meanwhile dipped 15 points and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite fell 34 points.

The ongoing nuclear crisis in Japan, in addition to escalating conflicts in the Middle East, seemed to gain more of investors' attention than a fairly  positive statement from the Federal Reserve.  Markets are reeling from the massive human and economic toll from the magnitude-9.0 earthquake and resulting tsunami that ravaged Japan last Friday, which has so far been blamed for 3,373 confirmed deaths.  Insiders say the death toll will likely end up well over 10,000.
