US Jobless Claims Drop

The US Labor Department released its weekly jobs report on Thursday, which showed that initial claims dropped to a seasonally adjusted annual pace of 420,000 for the week ending December 18th.  The figure was 3,000 below the previous week's figure after being revised to 423,000, the report showed.

The four week moving average of claims, a measure designed to smooth out seasonal volatility, increased by 2,500 from the previous week's revised claim of 423,500 to come in at 426,000.  The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate, meanwhile, was 3.2 percent for the week ending Dec. 11, a decrease of 0.1 percent from the previous week's unrevised rate of 3.3 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment for the week ending December 11th was reported as 4,064,000, a drop of 103,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 4,167,000.  The four week moving average was reported at 4,155,500, a decline of 38,250 from the prior week's revised number of 4,193,750.
