U.S. Job Openings Surge In March

The U.S. Labor Department issued its monthly report on the nation's job openings Wednesday, showing that there were more openings in March than at any time in the last two-and-a-half years, a sign of growing strength for the beleaguered job market.  The agency's Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey rose nearly 100,000 to 3.12 million in March, the measure's highest level since September 2008.

The reading also represents the first time since November 2008 that the survey's reading has remained above 3 million for two straight months.  The job openings rate, a measure of how many jobs remained unfilled at month's end, remained steady at 2.3 percent.  Job openings are commonly viewed as a barometer for labor demand.
