United States Sues BP Oil
The United States Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against BP and several other companies involved in the Gulf oil spill in a first step in its attempt to get billions of dollars for tremendous environmental and economic damage caused by the spill.
The suit alleges that the companies disregarded federal safety regulations in drilling the well that blew out on April 20th, triggering a deadly explosion onboard the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig. The lawsuit is separate from a Justice Dept. criminal investigation that has so far not resulted in any charges being filed.
The lawsuit, which was filed in a New orleans federal court, names BP, rig owner Transocean, and several other companies involved in the project, but Haliburton, the project's cement contractor, was not named in the suit. The company that supplied a key cutoff valve that reportedly failed was not named either, but officials said that that company and Haliburton could be added at a later date.
The suit comes after more than 300 lawsuits have already been filed by individuals and businesses, which are now consolidated in the New Orleans federal court, seeking damages for financial losses and compensation for the families of the 11 workers who were killed by the blast.
The Justice Department's claim asks that the companies involved be held liable for damages without limitation under the Oil Pollution Act for all removal costs and environmental impacts of the spill. The suit did not specify a dollar amount, saying the extent of damages are not yet known.
