Toyota Edges GM as World's #1 Carmaker
General Motors just missed passing Toyota as the world's biggest-selling automaker in2010, according to numbers reported on Monday. The Detroit carmaker and its partners, according to the report, sold 8.39 million vehicles last year, just short of Toyota and its partners' 8.418 million sales last year.
The numbers reflect Toyota's third consecutive year as the #1 global carseller, but their performance in 2010 was particularly impressive, considering the millions of vehicles the company recalled worldwide after getting hammered in the media for safety concerns. Despite the recalls and bad press, the Japanese company actually managed to boost sales over the course of the year, with sales climbing 8 percent. GM's sales, in the same time frame, increased 12.2 percent.
The battle for the title of the world's #1 carmaker over the next few years will likely depend on how the two companies fare in Brazil, India, and Russia. Those three countries represent three of the fastest growing auto markets in the world, and both companies are positioned to do well in all three.
