The Hobbit
After numerous setbacks, it looks like Lord of the Rings prequel
The Hobbit finally has the green light to start filming.
Initially Peter Jackson was going to step back and produce the film with Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo Del Toro set to be the man behind the camera. However, when MGM declared bankruptcy, and Del Toro left to pursue other projects, Jackson didn't want to risk losing the property and stepped into the director's chair.

Principal photography for The Hobbit is to begin February 2011 in New Zealand where the LOTR trilogy was filmed and casting for the film has begun.
Martin Freeman, who was Tim in the UK's The Office, is being courted to play Bilbo Baggins but only if his obligation to the new Sherlock series does not get in the way. Also approached for roles unspecified roles were James Nesbitt (star of Paul Greengrass' Bloody Sunday), David Tennant (until recently Doctor Who), and Michael Fassbender (Inglorious Basterds). Returning to their respective roles of Gollum and Gandalf are Andy Serkis and Ian McKellan.
The Hobbit has been inexplicably split into two movies with the first having a release date of December 2011 and the second half in December 2012.
