Texas Increases Payrolls By 44k In January
Texas businesses expanded payrolls by 44,100 workers in January, the biggest one-month gain in the state's job markets since last May, according to a report issued Friday from the Texas Workforce Commission. The state's jobless rate remained at 8.3 percent, whereas the national average went from 9 percent in December down to 8.9 percent.
Texas has now added jobs for four consecutive months, TWC said, and January's gains were made across all sectors. Many of the jobs gains came in the trade, transportation, and utilities category, which added 15,800 jobs, and the education and health services sector which added 7,600 jobs in the state. Government jobs increased by 5,500, and construction added 3,700 new workers across the state. The only major category that didn't add jobs in January was the leisure and hospitality industry, which lost 3,800 jobs in the month.
In a separate report, the US Bureau of Statistics said that payrolls increased for 35 of the nation's 50 US states in January, while decreasing in the other 15. The gain for Texas was the largest in terms of actual numbers, followed by Michigan's net increase of 39,700 jobs. In terms of percentage job increases, tiny Vermont led the nation with a 1.8 percent payroll increase in the month, followed by Maine (1.2), while Michigan and Idaho tied for third with a 1.0 percent gain. Texas' job gain worked out to a 0.4 percent increase.
