Texas Approves Site for 36 States to Dump Radioactive
Waste
The Texas Low-Level Radioactive Commission approved rules on Tuesday that will allow 36 states to dump low-level radioactive waste in a remote landfill along the Texas-New Mexico border. The measure passed in a 5-2 vote by the Commission's members after some last minute maneuvering by environmental groups failed to delay the vote.
Environmentalists have warned that the dump would pollute groundwater and the plan has been commented on by more than 5,000 people. The vote heats up an ongoing debate over where nuclear waste can be dumped, a fight that has taken on increased importance since President Obama vowed to reduce the nation's dependence on foreign oil by building more nuclear power plants.
In the end, though, the owner of the site, Dallas-based Waste Control Specialists, were able to convince the commission the site would offer a secure location for permanent radioactive waste disposal. Prior to Wednesday's vote, the site was only authorized for waste from Texas, Vermont, and federal facilities.
