Tesla Announces Model S Details

Tesla Motors Inc., and electric car company in Palo Alto, California, opened up its headquarters and research center to reporters for the first time on Wednesday. The company showed off its growing automotive engineering capabilities and released new information about its Model S sedan.

One of the nicest features of the $57,000 electric vehicle is that its battery pack is designed to slide into a large panel beneath the car, which, according to Tesla engineers, provides additional rigidity for the car's body and improves the vehicle's handling and aerodynamics. The company is planning to manufacture 20,000 Model S sedans per year at a former Toyota factory in Fremont, California. The cars are expected to become available for purchase in early 2012.

The company also proclaimed they are working on several variations of the Model S, including an SUV model, made using the same aluminum and steel design. Although the Model S is aimed at drivers whose concern for the environment is a major vehicle in car choice, the company says they are designing vehicles to compete with other manufacturers in driving experience.

The Model S will reportedly be capable of driving for 300 miles on a single charge, and will have enough power to accelerate from zero to 60 in less than six seconds. There will be trunk space in both the front and rear of the car, and it will be designed to carry five adults, though there will be an additional row of fold-up seats capable of seating small children.
