Taylor Swift's Success Defies Myth About Record Industry
The debut sales explosion for Taylor Swift's third album, "Speak Now," has shattered several widely held beliefs about the state of the struggling recording industry. The album, Swift's third, debuted at the top of the Bollboard 200 albums chart with 1,047,000 sales.
It's just the 16th album in the history of the chart to debut with over a million sales, and the biggest-selling first week for an album by a female country artist ever, at a time when the industry is struggling and many albums debut on top of the chart with 3 or 4 hundred thousand sales.
Many executives had believed that the million-mark, in terms of an album's first week of sales, was un-attainable. Yet, here come's Taylor Swift with an album that passes it by 47,000.
Industry insiders have said the Compact Disc, as a format for music delivery, was dying. Consumers snapped up just shy of 770,000 CDs in the week following October 25th, when "Speak Now" arrived in stores.
And some producers believed that country albums couldn't be sold digitally, and the soon-to-be 21 year-old moved 278,000 copies of her album online.
Not to mention the long held assumption that kid's don't buy music, yet the core of Swift's expanding audience is kids.
