Study Shows Man Heading Towards Causing Earth's 6th Mass Extinction

A new study appears to indicate that humanity is on the verge of causing the sixth mass extinction in the Earth's history, though there is still time to prevent the die-off, the study concluded.  Mass extinctions are defined as events in which at least 75 percent of the planet's species disappear within a span of a few hundred thousand toa few million years.  This type of die-off has occurred five times since multicellular life first appeared on Earth some 540 million years ago.

The last mass extinction on Earth occurred about 65 million years ago, when the dinosaurs disappeared.  At the current rate of species extinction, the study showed, Earth will enter its sixth mass extinction within 300 to 2,000 years.

“It's bittersweet, because we're showing that we have this crisis,” said one of the study's co-authors, Elizabeth Ferrer.  “But we still have time to fix this.”
