Spiderman Reboot
I reported earlier on DC's plans to
reboot their Superman franchise and today after the announcement of
the main villain, I wanted to talk about a reboot happening over at
the House of M (Marvel), namely your friendly neighborhood
Spider-Man.
After a trilogy of blockbusters directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, that went from Great if not perfect (1) to Outstanding (2) to WTF? (3), Marvel decided rather than let them have a go at a fourth one, they would start the franchise over and put Peter Parker back in high school.
Marc Webb, who made a splash with his chronologically challenged (500) Days of Summer, was hired to direct (though it could have been for his namesake).
A list was compiled of relative unknown potentials to play Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and after testing and then retesting, Andrew Garfield was chosen for the role. Garfield can be currently seen in The Social Network.
Recently, Emma Stone coming off the star making Easy A was cast for a prominent female role and many speculated that being a natural redhead she would play Mary Jane. However, Hollywood has a twisted sense of humor and revealed she would instead be playing blond Gwen Stacy.
Finally, Rhys Ifans, most recognized for his role in Notting Hill as Hugh Grant's roommate, has joined the cast as the, until today, under wraps villain. The official announcement of who Ifans will be playing is Curt Connors aka. The Lizard.
Because it has become all the rage, and it brings in that much extra in box-office revenue, it was decided the Spider-Man reboot would be released in 3-D. Hopefully, shot in 3-D and not converted post-production. The Spiderman reboot has a release date of July 12, 2012.
Since it is too early for a trailer to the new movie, here is the intro to the best (IMHO) animated version of Spider-Man, The Spectacular Spider-Man:
