Sony Online Entertainment Announces Major Cutbacks,
Layoffs
Sony Online Entertainment released a statement Friday outlining its considerable plans for downsizing the at the video game developer. Three of Sony's five studios will be shut down, and a total of 205 workers will be let go. The company announced the plan after rumors had run rampant Thursday about Sony layoffs and downsizing plans.
SOE said the moves are part of a “strategic decision to reduce costs and streamline its global workforce,” adding that it would cuts 205 jobs and close down studios in Denver, Seattle, and Tuscon. The statement added that “all possible steps are being taken to ensure team members affected by the transition are treated with appropriate concern.”
Still standing after the shakeup will be Sony's studios in San Diego (EverQuest, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, PlanetSide, Free Realms) and Austin (Star Wars Galaxies, DC Universe Online). Left in limbo will be Sony's still-in-development online spy shooting game, “The Agency.” Sony says the designers it keeps on the payroll will be redirected to support its older Everquest and PlanetSide franchises.
The company insisted that the decision won't have an impact on its current live games such as Free Realms, Star Wars The Clone Wars Adventures: Card Commander, and Magic The Gathering, adding that ongoing projects at its Denver and Tuscon studios would be moved to San Diego.
