Snow Leopard Population Discovered in Afghanistan

The Wildlife Conservation Society has reportedly discovered a surprising healthy population of rare snow leopards in the mountainous regions of the northeastern section of Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor.  The discovery offers some hope to one of the world's rarest big cats, which lives among some of the world's tallest mountains.  Scientists estimate that between 4,500 and 7,500 of these beautiful animals remain in the wild scattered across a dozen countries in Central Asia.

The discovery is documented in the June 29th issue of the International Journal of Environmental Studies, which details a study conducted by WCS conservationists.  The study employed camera traps in the region which documented the presence of snow leopards at 16 different locations across a wide-ranging landscape.  The study represents the first documentation of the presence of snow leopards in Afghanistan.
