Skype Users Unable to Log In
Internet phone and video service provider Skype reportedly experienced a service outage on Wednesday, signaling a weakness of the free online communication tool. Partially owned by online auction giant eBay, Skype said that many users in the US, Asia, and Europe were having trouble signing on to the site. Many users voiced their frustration over the outage on Twitter.
The seven year-old company itself took to Twitter to apologize for any inconvenience caused by the outage and said it was looking into its cause. Around 3:30 PM ET, the company reported that its service was returning to normal, but that it could be a few more hours before everybody was able to sign on.
The as-yet-unexplained outage, coming at the height of the holiday season, represents the latest blow to the reputation of the service. Dropped calls and poor service quality have long been viewed as weak points for the company, which offers free voice and video calls between users as well as low-cost calls to landlines. As of October, Skype boated 124 million users.
