Skype App for iPhones Released

A new app for iPhones will let Skype users make and receive video calls over wireless networks or Wi-Fi connections. Called Skype SA, the app will allow users to connect to any Wi-Fi connection or AT&T's wireless 3G network.

The app was released Thursday and is available in Apple's App Store. It will allow users of the iPhone 3 and iPhone 4 make free video calls to other Skype users who are using the app or are logged into Skype on a computer or video phone. Users of the latest iPod Touch will also be able to use the app using a Wi-Fi connection. The app works with iPads, as well.

Skype's software offers free services such as voice and video calls to other Skype users. Users pay for services such as phone calls to landlines or cell phones. During the first half of 2010, according to Skype officials, video calls accounted for 40 percent of all users' time spent on the service.

Apple's iPhone 4, released in June, was the company's first to feature a front-facing camera for video chat. The phone came with FaceTime, which allows users to make video calls to other iPhone 4 users, the latest iPod Touch, and iPad, or a Mac computer. The service does not, however, work over cellular networks and users can't use the app to place calls to Windows-based computers.

Luxembourg-based Skype is not the first third-party app for the iPhone to enable free video calls over AT&T's network, either. Apps like Fring and Tango also offer the capability, though neither can come close to matching Skype's massive userbase. An average of 124 million users use Skype every month, and their total number of registered users is more than 600 million.
