Search for YouTube Videos on... Bing?

A common complaint among YouTube's most active users is that Google's search makes it annoying to search for musicians and their music.  That's a pretty significant gripe when you consider that YouTube is now the Web's number one source for new music discovery.  You would think that with all its knowledge and experience in searching the web, Google could find a better way to allow fans to find music, but the famed Google algorithm is designed to search the web for sources of information about a queried topic, not scour through videos for titles associated with a particular band.  Turns out, however, that somebody else has been working on this problem, and appears to have a solution, though it's hard to believe who it is.

Microsoft recently rolled out an update to the video search feature on its Bing search engine, the biggest rival to Google in the Web search space.  The feature offers a far superior experience to YouTube's search, finding YouTube videos as well as clips on other sites in a flash.  A search for Dio, for example, brings up a list of classics from the band founded by the Black Sabbath frontman, plus 12 different videos including live performances.  Not a single result that has nothing to do with Dio, like you often come across when searching for bands on YouTube.  Clicking on a title from the list of songs will narrow the search to just that title.  There's also a handy bar displaying other searches conducted by users who also searched for Dio.  You don't even have to leave Bing to watch one of the videos, as clicking on a video in the search results simply opens that video just like any YouTube video embedded on another website.

Bing's video search is impressive thorough, turning up videos and song titles for Savatge, Keel, Overkill and Laaz Rockit.  More obscure bands like Sanctuary and Autopsy failed to turn up results, but who remembers who they are anyway?  The coolest part of the Bing video search is that hovering over a thumbnail will activate a preview complete with audio.  YouTube doesn't even provide non-audio previews. Searches not related to music work the same, except that suggested searches are not songs but related searches.  Results still appear as thumbnails that become previews with audio when you hover over them.
