Scientists Warn of Global Catastrophes from
Emissions
Scientists are saying that a global temperature increase of four degrees Celsius will occur in the 21st century, causing “devastating impacts”, should humanity continue producing the same greenhouse gas emissions as we do today.
The report appeared in a special edition of the UK science journal, “Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A,” which coincides with the beginning of United Nations climate talks in Cancun, Mexico. The scientists any further delays in reducing emissions could make the target of two degrees Celsius, a target they say would be safe, nearly impossible to achieve.
A slew of studies have been conducted that demonstrate the various effects a temperature rise would have on rainforests, sea-levels, water supply, and agriculture. A number of those studies estimate that the dangerous four degree mark could be reached as early as the 2060s, if changes are not made now. Scientists say that the four degree mean global temperature rise could mean an average rise in temperature of 15 degrees in some areas.
If the scientists are correct, the world's sea levels could increase by as much as two meters by the end of the century, displacing as much as 2.5 percent of the world's population in the process. Scientists assert that now is the time for nations and leaders to take action, before the effects of greenhouse emissions go too far for us to be able to do anything about it.
