Search for Chinese Bigfoot
A group of Chinese scientists has asked the international scientific community for assistance in searching for evidence of the country's version of Bigfoot, referred to by locals at the “Yeren”, which means wild man.
There have been more than 400 sightings over they years of the half man, half ape Yeren in a remote, mountainous part of the Hubei province. Expeditions in the 1970s and 1980s were able to find hair, a single footprint, excrement, and an apparent sleeping nest believed to be evidence of the Yeren's existence, but no conclusive proof has ever been found.
Eye-witnesses describe the creature as being more than 2 meters (6ft 7in) tall, walking upright, and covered with gray, red, or black hair. The scientists estimate the search will cost as much as 10 million yuan ($1.5 million), and are seeking financing from a number of companies and organizations, so there is as-of-yet no definitive timetable for when the search will begin.
China is historically familiar with the science of cryptozoology, the study of and search for creatures of legend, with a long history of tales of Loch-Ness monster-like creatures reportedly living in lakes in remote parts of the country. Tibetans have also long reported sightings of the legendary Yeti, also known as the abominable snowman, living high in the Himalayas.
