Samsung Countersues Apple

Samsung Electronics said on Friday it has filed patent lawsuits against Apple Inc. in Japan, Germany, and South Korea. The suits come just one week after Apple filed lawsuits against it, alleging that Samsung's smartphones and tablet computers copy Apple's products. South Korean-based Samsung said its lawsuit involves the infringement of five of its patents, but declined to specify which technologies were involved. “Samsung is responding actively to the legal action taken against us in order to protect our intellectual property and to ensure our continued innovation and growth in the mobile communications business,” the statement read.

Apple's lawsuit, filed last Friday, claims that Samsung violated Apple patents and trademarks with several of its smartphones and tablets, which Apple claims have the look and feel of the iPhone and iPad. Apple's doinance of the mobile computing market as Google's Android continues to operate more devices. Samsung is one of the fastest-growing makers of smartphones with the increasing popularity of Android, and has emerged as Apple's chief rival in the tablet space.

Tech firms around the world are engaging in legal battles to preserve and expand their shares of the world's hottest tech segment. The dispute between Apple and Samsung could threaten the earnings growth of both companies, as Samsung is the chief manufacturer of a number of key components in Apple products such as LCD displays and chips. Because of these close ties between the firms, strong iPad and iPhone sales translate to more revenue for Samsung. Apple was Samsung's second-biggest customer in 2010, representing about 6.2 trillion won in sales.
