Report Shows Illegal Music Download Will Top 1.2 Billion in
2010
A British recording industry lobby group, BPI, released a study on Thursday indicating that at least 1.2 billion songs will have been illegally downloaded by the end of 2010. The estimate, which the group called “conservative,” is more than three times the estimated 370 million songs expected to be purchased legally, both as singles and on albums.
Industry insiders say the report underscores the massive scale of the problem facing record labels, who are reluctant to spend resources on new talent while revenues are being undercut so drastically. Insiders say the problem is threatening to deprive an entire generation of talented young musicians of a chance to make a career in music.
BPI's Digital Music Nation 2010 report indicated that digital sales of singles in the UK could top 160 million this year, compared to just 150 million in 2009, while digital album sales would total right around 21 million, compared to 16.1 million a year ago. The total digital market works out to the equivalent of 370 million songs sold.
According to data from the Official Charts Company, 2010 saw the first single to sell more than a million copies in the Black Eyed Peas' “I Gotta Feeling.” The firm also reported that 19 albums sold more than 100,000 digital copies, including Lady Gaga's “The Fame,” and Kings of Leon's “Only By the Night,” which each surpassed the 250,000 legal download mark.
