PlayStation Phone Leaked Online
Pictures were leaked on the internet Tuesday evening of the much-rumored Sony PlayStation phone. The techie-blog Engadget leaked the photos of what it reports is the prototype for the device which they first spoke about in August.
The phone will reportedly have the classic Sony button scheme in addition to a multi-touch sensor and shoulder buttons. It will run on the Android 3.0 operating system (also known as Gingerbread) and will have access to a new custom Sony marketplace where users will be able to locate and download games and other apps. Engadget also said the PlayStation phone will feature a four-inch screen, along with 1GB of solid-state storage and 512 MB of RAM.
A Sony spokeman said that the images are “definitely fake” early Wednesday, but the company later changed its stance to “we do not comment on rumor and speculation.” The company declined to comment on the existence of the PlayStation phone. NowGamer.com, a gaming news website, also mentioned that Sony's stance on the report shifted from “definitely fake” to “no comment.”
Sony first talked about producing a PlayStation phone three years ago, calling the idea “seductive” and “plausible.” Then, in August, reports surfaced that the phone was in the design stages, and would run on the Android platform. Engadget says that a 2011 release-date for the new product is likely, but they aren't ruling out a release in time for the holidays.
