Civilization Discovered in Russia's Mountains
Scientists have uncovered evidence of a previously unknown Bronze Age civilization in Russia's Caucasus Mountains thanks to a series of aerial photographs taken some 40 years ago, researchers announced on Monday.
The researchers estimate that the civilization inhabited the region from the 16th to the 14th centuries, BC. The group has been investigating the region since 2006. After careful inspection of old photographs of the region, researchers discovered a series of stone foundations at close to 200 sites spread over an area of about 60 miles. The foundations, according to the scientists, were obviously constructed according to the same architectural plan, are connected together by roads, and an oval courtyard sits in the center.
The area also contains decorations and bronze items that would indicate a link to the Kuban civilization, which was discovered at the end of the 19th century at the base of Mount Kazbek and is known for producing similar artistic bronze works similar to those found at the new site.
Using modern research techniques including global positioning technology, researchers were able to use old black-and-white photographs of the region to uncover the sites, which range from an altitude of 4,620 feet to 7, 920 feet. Researchers have described the discovery as historically significant because of the number of sites found in the same location.
