Nearly Half of American 12-Year-Olds Active On
Facebook
A recent study conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project showed that almost half of all 12 year-old children in the United States are using social networking sites, even though they do not meet the minimum age requirement for many of them, including Facebook.
The study further illustrates that the popularity of these social media outlets increases as the teens get older as about 64 percent of 13 year-olds are active on social media sites, and 82 percent of children between the ages of 14 and 17.
Facebook is reportedly very involved in trying to prevent kids from becoming addicted to social networking at such a young age, however. A report in the Daily Telegraph recently showed that Facebook is removing about 20,000 users a day that do not meet the minimum age requirement of 14.
In a recent meeting with Australia's cyber-safety committee, Facebook's chief privacy adviser Mozelle Thompson acknowledged that underage users were active on the site. It's certainly not difficult for kids to get on, all they have to do is lie about their age when they sign up for an account, Facebook has no technology in place to verify the age of its users.
Thompson did say that Facebook is doing everything it can to identify and remove underage users from its network. “There are people who lie. There are people who are under 13 [accessing Facebook],” he said. “Facebook removes 20,000 people a day, people who are underage.” Underage users have become an increasingly significant concern for the company in recent months, especially as regulators around the world pressure the company to act.
