NASA Scientists Discover New Form of Life

Scientists at NASA have reportedly discovered a new form of life that is able to grow by substituting arsenic for phosphorus.  The discovery significantly redefines the agency's ongoing search for life forms other than those found on Earth.

The discovery occurred when scientists performed teste on mud taken from Mono Lake, a Northern California body of water with a salt content three times as high as the oceans and a high concentration of arsenic.

Researchers created an environment with all the elements necessary for known life forms on earth except phosphorus, one of the main building blocks of all know life forms.  They substituted arsenic, an element that is toxic to most known life forms, for the phosphorus.

To the surprise of the scientists, a microbe present in the environment was not only able to survive, but to grow and thrive in it.  The experiment will have wide-reaching ramifications on how NASA searches for life forms in outer space going forward.
