After months of rumors, Reuters is reporting that Cupertino, California-based Apple Inc. is preparing to launch a cloud-based music service, beating Google to the punch. Google, who announced plans for a cloud-based MP3 service ahead of Apple, says its plans have stalled. Apple's service, meanwhile, will differ from Amazon's cloud-based music service in that Apple is actively seeking licensing agreements before launching the service.
The company has reportedly already obtained deals with two of the big four music labels and plans to launch the new service soon. The deals would allow Apple to store a single master track on its servers and share it with its users. The service will essentially let users store songs on their hard drives, and ones they purchase from iTunes, ad listen to them at anytime on multiple devices. Apple's cloud service will only be for music, and likely will require users to have a copy of iTunes installed to access music.
