Jobs Report Shows
Unemployment Spikes in 27 States
The latest jobs report from the Labor Department showed the nation’s unemployment rate edged up slightly, but, the picture is a little gloomier for some states like Nevada, California, and Michigan. Twenty-seven states in all reported a rise in jobless claims in August, almost twice the number (14) of states reporting unemployment increases in July. While the national unemployment rate remained stagnant at 9.6 percent, Nevada, California, and Michigan have frequently suffered jobless rates over 12 percent.
Nevada topped the list of high-unemployment states for the fourth consecutive month in August, with a staggering, record-high jobless rate of 14.4 percent, up from 14.3 in July. Michigan came in second with a 13.1 percent jobless rate, unchanged from July, and California was third on the list, with their unemployment rate rising from 12.3 to 12.4 percent from July to August.
The jobs report showed that there are now 13 states with unemployment rates over ten percent, with Kentucky and Georgia joining the list in August. Unemployment fell in 13 states, as well, compared with 18 states experiencing declines in jobless rate in July. Ten states, plus the District of Columbia, reported no change in unemployment rate from July to August. The Midwest continues to experience the lowest jobless rates, with North Dakota reporting a 3.7 percent rate, South Dakota at 4.5 percent, and Nebraska at 4.6 percent.
