Intel announced plans on Tuesday to invest as much as $8 billion on new and existing microchip manufacturing plants that could potentially create as many as 1,000 new tech jobs in the states of Arizona and Oregon. The company reported it will fund a new a new development of fabrication plants in Oregon and will upgrade four plants located in both states.
The plants will reportedly produce the next generation of Intel microprocessors, the 22-nanometer chip. In addition to the estimated 1,000 new permanent jobs, the company says the projects will also create 6,000 to 8,000 construction jobs.
A spokesman for the company said the new plant will be constructed in Hillsboro, Oregon, about 20 miles east of Portland, where the company already has a substantial presence. Two of the four plants slated for an upgrade are also in Hillsboro, while the other two are located in Phoenix, Arizona. The new plant will be the first built by Intel since 2007, when the company completed construction on one of the plants in Phoenix that will be renovated.
The Santa Clara, CA-based chipmaker reportedly generates 75 percent of its revenue from overseas markets, but employs 75 percent of its chip-making workers in the US. The company has been at the forefront of calls for the US government to offer more incentives to tech companies to build more plants domestically.
