Initial Jobless Claims Fall More-than-Expected

The U.S. Labor Department released its weekly report on jobless claims Thursday, reporting a 2-and-a-half year low in initial claims.  The report offers evidence of an ongoing recovery in the US job market, though the numbers do partially reflect the winding down of a spike in the data caused by extreme weather in January.

Initial claims for unemployment benefits fell 36,000 for the week to a seasonally adjusted 383,000 claims.  It is the lowest total reported since early July, 2008.  Economists had projected claims would dip, but only to 410,000.  Analysts say that the report verifies a recent string of anecdotal reports suggesting the labor market is beginning to turn around.
