Initial Jobless Claims Drop
The number of Americans filing initial unemployment claims climbed higher than expected last week, according to numbers released from the Labor Department on Thursday. The agency reported a seasonally adjusted number of claims as 397,000 for the week ended March 5th, up 26,000 from an upwardly revised total of 371,000 for the week prior. Economists in a recent Briefing.com poll had forecast an average of 382,000 for the week.
The number of continuing claims, meanwhile, was also slightly higher than projected at 3.77 million for the week ended February 26th, the latest data available for continuing claims. The number was down, however, from the previous week's revised total of 3.79 million. Economists had forecast continuing claims would come in at 3.75 million.
The Labor Department's four-week moving average of claims, a gauge designed to smooth out seasonal volatility, came in at 392,250, up 3,000 from the revised figure for the week prior. The four-week moving average for continuing claims fell 34,750 to 3.83 million.
