Indonesian Volcano Erupts Again, Ash Cloud Reaches
Major City
Mount Merapi, a volcano in the central part of Indonesia, erupted again early on Saturday morning, releasing clouds of ash that reached one of the island-nation's major cities for the first time. Yogyakarta, a city of about 400,000 people, was covered with the ashen cloud. The ash reduced visibility to as little as ten meters and the city's residents took to wearing masks or hankerchiefs over their faces.
The volcano began erupting on Tuesday, and officials warned residents to be on high alert after at least 6 eruptions occurred on Friday. An official from the Yogyakarta police said that residents within a 6 mile radius of Merapi may have to be relocated. Medical officials say that the volcano has claimed at least 36 lives, and rescue and recovery efforts are still ongoing.
The nation's government is scrambling to organize aid efforts for tens of thousands of displaced locals. The European Commission has pledged $2.1 million in aid for the victims of the volcano as well as the tsunami victims in the region.
Mount Merapi, which lies north of, and can be seen from Yogyakarta, lies in one of the world's most densely populated regions and is one of the world's most active volcanoes. The volcanoes summit reaches an altitude of almost 10,000 feet.
