Ice Sheet Melting Faster, Study Shows

A new study released over the weekend showed that the ice sheet covering Greenland melted faster in 2010 than at any time since records have been kept, starting in 1979.  The data is significant because scientists believe that the Greenland ice sheet will be a major contributor to rising sea levels in coming decades.

“This past melt season was exceptional, with melting in some areas stretching up to 50 days longer than average,” one of the study's co-authors, Marco Tedesco said.  Tedesco also said that the portion of the ice sheet that melts has been expanding by about 17,000 square kilometers per year over the last 30 years.  “This is equivalent to adding a melt-region the size of Washington state every ten years,”  Tedesco explained.  “Or, in alternative, this means that an area of the size of France melted in 2010 which was not melting in 1979.”

The study also showed that Greenland's ice sheet got diminished snowfall last year and that the country's average summer temperature was 3 degrees Centigrade higher than 2009.
