Honda and Toyota Extend Production Halts Through Next
Weekend
While a few smaller Japanese automakers have resumed production, albeit in a limited capacity, Honda and Toyota, the two Japanese carmakers with the greatest impact on the US market, announced separately on Tuesday they will extend production halts through the end of the week.
Toyota, which had planned to resume operation at its plants Tuesday, extended production at all of its Japanese plants at least through the weekend as it works to sort out the flow of parts, especially electronic components, and continues to deal with power outages. A number of Toyota's models which enjoy tremendous popularity in the US, such as the hybrid Prius and all Lexus models, are manufactured exclusively in Japan.
Honda, meanwhile, said that its assembly lines as Saitama and Suzuki, where many popular hybrids like the Fit are made, will remain shut down at least until Sunday. Production of Honda motorcycles is also affected by the shutdown.
The shortage of parts brought on by shutdowns in Japan is also reportedly having an affect on a number of US auto plants, including a GM plant in Shreveport, Louisiana where Chevy Colorados and GMC Canyons are made.
