Hackers Unlock Playstation 3
Hackers Unlock Playstation 3
At the 27th annual Chaos Communications Conference held in Berlin, Germany, members of a renowned hacking firm announced that they have been able to completely overthrow the internal security of Sony's Playstation 3. The hackers, from the group “fail Overflow”, claim to have obtained the same control as the manufacturer to decide what software can be run on the device.
The Playstation 3, which has so far been pretty resistant to hacking attempts, utilizes a tightly guarded encryption system to ensure that only software approved by Sony can be run on the system. Each section of code is required to offer up a cipher, which is created by a mathematical formula, to pass the encryption process.
But, the fail Overflow team now has those encryption keys. And, thanks to renowned iPhone hacker George Hotz, who has published the keys on his website, so does everybody else. The publishing of the encryption keys gives any software developer complete access to the Playstation 3's inner workings. Pirated games and unsigned software can now be run on the system, and Sony has no way to fix the problem outside of releasing a new system with a completely revised encryption method.
