Google's Chrome Gaining Users
According to statistics released on Monday by Net Applications, Google's Chrome Browser now has a ten percent market share globally, as of December 2010. Chrome's gains in usage have mainly come at the expense of Microsoft's Internet Explorer, whose share has been steadily declining for years, though its latest version, IE9, seems to be getting attention.
The report shows that usage of IE9 grew from 0.4 percent in November to 0.5 percent in December. While fractions of a percent may sound rather insignificant, they can actually represent large numbers of users, considering that hundreds of millions of people around the globe use the Internet regularly. And with the market so competitive, browser makers are quite attuned to the areas showing the fastest growth.
Google's Chrome, meanwhile, has been increasing its number of users for months. The browser went from a 9.3 percent share of the world browser market in November to ten percent in December. The growing popularity of the browser is extremely helpful to Google's ambitions of expansion into more areas of Web-related business. Google can easily use Chrome to explore, develop, and promote new features such as Native Client, SPDY, WebP, and False Start, that Google hopes to use to speed up the Web and make it a more powerful foundation for applications.
Mozilla's Firefox, the second-most popular browser, remained flat in the latest data with a share of 22.8 percent, while Apple's Safari increased from 5.6 percent to 5.9 percent. Chrome's and Safari's growth occurred at the expense of Internet Explorer, whose share fell from 58.4 percent to 57.1 percent in the latest report.
