The Google Voice service has been a hit since it debuted. The service makes screening calls and managing multiple phones easy, but users have always had one complaint: you couldn't port your existing phone number over to the service. But, Google appears on the verge of remedying that issue. Quietly, the Mountain View, California-based search giant has enabled number porting for its Google Voice service.
That said, the porting ability has only been made available to certain users as a test so far. But, based on comments from insiders, it appears that a wide-scale launch is forthcoming. A statement from the company read: “We’re continually testing new features to enhance the user experience. For a limited amount of time, we’re making the Google Voice number porting process available to users. We don’t have any additional details to share at this time, but plan to offer this feature to all users in the near future.”
The porting service does include a $20 charge currently, though it is unknown whether the price will change once it becomes available to all users. And, the service comes with a handful of warnings. For one, depending on your service contract with your current carrier, you could be charged an early termination fee (ETF). Some carriers charge ETFs in the hundreds of dollars range.
