Google to Buy New York Office Building
In what is being referred to as the biggest US real estate deal of the year, Google has signed a purchase contract to buy one of the largest office buildings in Manhattan for more than $1.8 billion. The Mountain View-based search engine reportedly put down a substantial deposit to secure the 15-story building, which is located at 111 Eight Ave. just north of the meatpacking district.
The deal, according to sources familiar with it, is expected to close before the end of the year. The deal signifies a rebounding real estate market, at least in the commercial sector, and reflects a vote of confidence by one of the world's largest tech firms in the New York City market.
The brick-constructed building covers an entire city block between 15th and 16th Streets, and is already home to Google's East Coast headquarters and 1,800 of its employees. The building's other tenants include Lifetime Entertainment, Barnes and Noble, Nike USA, and Deutsch Advertising. With 2.9 million square feet of space, more than the Empire State Building, the building has plenty of room for the search giant to grow.
