Google to Acquire Groupon?
Internet search giant Google is reportedly in discussions to acquire the local coupon website Groupon, after Yahoo launched a failed attempt to pick up the business earlier this year with a bid of between $2 billion and $3 billion.
Sources cautioned, however, that talks are still ongoing and could very easily end the same way that Yahoo's attempt to acquire Groupon did. Officials at the Mountain View, California-based search engine have declined to comment on the situation, and Groupon officials have been similarly tight-lipped about the negotiations.
Still, insiders say that Groupon has its bankers Allen & Co. actively seeking buyers for the company, even though its investors have expressed a desire to remain independent. What's not known at this time is whether there are other suitors for Groupon, whose monthly revenues are more than $50 million in the huge local retail market.
Insiders say that other than Google, only three companies would probably be able to afford the hefty price tag associated with Groupon: Microsoft, Amazon, and eBay. All three, like Google, have more than enough cash reserves to pony up for the impressive start-up in the lucrative local commerce market. Groupon currently dominates the arena despite a number of clone companies launching competitive businesses.
