Google Invests In Clean Power Plant in
Germany
Google announced on Thursday its first clean energy project in Europe in which it will spend about $5 million in a solar photovoltaic power plant in a suburb of the German capital of Berlin. Google has reportedly partnered with a German private equity firm called Capital Stage on the project. The project is currently awaiting approval from German competitions authorities, and will be subject to additional customary closing conditions before the plant is turned on.
The recently built power plant is located on a 116-acre plot of land in Brandenburg der Havel, very close to Berlin. The plant was designed to provide clean energy to more than 5,000 nearby households. Google says the plant's peak capacity is 18.65MWp, making it one of the largest power plants in Germany.
Google has invested in clean energy before, but only in the United States. The Mountain View, California-based search giant has invested about $100 million in the clean energy sector, in companies such as eSolar, Potter Drilling, AltaRock, and others.
Last year, Google invested $38.8 million in a pair of wind farms in North Dakota. The two farms will generate a reported 169.5 megawatts of power, enough energy to supply 55,000 homes.
