Goldman Sachs Poised to Reclaim M&A Title

Goldman Sachs appears poised to reclaim the top spot in the ranking of mergers and acquisitions advisers in 2010 after rival Morgan Stanley wrestled the distinction away from them in 2009 after a nine year Goldman run at the top.

The two banks have been neck-and-neck throughout 2010, ahead of rivals such as JP Morgan, Credit Suisse, Bank of America, and Citigroup.  With just a few hours left before the years' stats become final, Goldman has advised on 368 deals worth a total of $553.5 billion while Morgan Stanley has been in on 393 deals worth a total of $537.9 billion.  Those numbers are estimates, and with the margin just $15.6 billion, the result won't be official until the final numbers are counted.

According to Thomson Reuters M&A league tables, Goldman led in 2010'2 first quarter but Morgan Stanley took the lead in the second.  Then the two firms swapped spots again in the second half of the year.  While both firms have suffered when M&A volumes took a critical hit from the financial crisis, their strong reputations have allowed them to get more deals to push ahead in the global M&A race.
